"Travel" Arthur Simms & Garry Nichols
"Travel" is two different thoughts and places that come in ways from the same place. Garry Nichols' paintings are organic patterns and places that could be far away, sensuous plants and water, elements of nature. These paintings have their own sense of time. The surface is lush the color is rich and deep, the paint is carefully applied oil. Arthur Simms' sculptures are rough, made of found objects-plastic, toys, bicycles, wheels and fences collected from the urban landscape. Bound together with wire, wood and rope, they are vehicles that have travelled many places.
The rusty raw elements of Simms' sculptures grow together as if they were trees or plants. Both these spiritual vehicles, Arthur Simms' three dimensional sculpture and Garry Nichols' paintings of organic patterns transport us to places that appear to be far away while being very close.
Arthur Simms born in Kingston, Jamaica has most recently received a Guggenhiem Fellowship. He has exhibited internationally and currently represents Jamaica in Open 2000 in Venice, Italy. Mr. Simms will be representing Jamaica in the first ever Pavilion in the next Venice Biennial.
